What is the JMP?
The WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme for Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene (JMP) has reported country, regional and global estimates of progress on drinking water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) since 1990. The JMP maintains an extensive global database and has become the leading source of comparable estimates of progress at national, regional and global levels. The 2015 update marked the end of the Millennium Development Goal period and the 2017 update established baseline estimates for monitoring the new Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) targets.
What is the JMP doing to support menstrual health monitoring?
The JMP expanded its database in 2021 to incorporate harmonized menstrual health indicators, including a new tab in the JMP Country Files. The JMP 2025 progress update on WASH in households included a dedicated section on menstrual health and an Annex summarising available national estimates on menstrual health for 70 countries.
To strengthen monitoring through household surveys, the JMP convened experts in 2022 to develop technical recommendations for updating the core menstrual health questions asked in women’s questionnaires. In 2025, the JMP brought together country teams and partners to review early lessons from implementing the MICS7 complementary Menstrual Health and Hygiene (MHH) module, identifying areas to improve training and data collection, strengthen collaboration, make MHH data more accessible and actionable, and build evidence to support advocacy and interventions.
